Website

This is a personal website intended for three main purposes:

Serious issues affecting our well-being in this bordering-on-insane world.

Helpful information for anyone and everyone about life, health and any issues I see as important, or maybe just something to laugh about.

Its Name:  “The Golden Rule

After a fair bit of agonising and scribbling about a dozen options, including ‘Devil’s Advocate’ (discarded because it has connotations of arguing for the sake of arguing and possibly not believing one own points of debate), and others all relating to truth and justice, this one really does it for me.

The following definition/commentary (Acknowledgement ‘Wise Geek’) says it all:

“The Golden Rule is often thought of as originating in Christianity with the Biblical verse “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12). Actually, some version of the Golden Rule exists far prior to Christianity. It is in fact a common belief held in some form by most world religions.

The earliest form of the Golden Rule in religion dates prior to Confucianism and BuddhismConfucius is attributed with a statement in the 6th Century BCE that one should not extend harm to others which one would not wish for one’s self. Buddhism documents also dating from the 6th century BCE include the quote “Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.”

Hindu religious aspects that include the teaching of Karma also date to the 6th century BCE or earlier and include in the Mahabharata the prescriptive to “Do not unto others which would cause pain if done to you” (5:15:17).”

Its meaning is, or should be, clear to all.

Selected because I believe it is the most profound single statement and doctrine in our civilization.  Adherence to this rule by EVERYBODY would solve all the world’s problems.

In practice, of course, impossible to achieve. People are not that way inclined. The simplest example is the masochist. He/she enjoys being hurt so obviously can still abide by ‘the rule’ and cause trouble.  Then there are the psychopaths who have absolutely no comprehension of the meaning of the rule or inclination to follow it. They and the hedonists prevent any hope of a peaceful existence.  So many basically normal people live without awareness that they have a choice, they just have a self-centered approach, do what they feel like and, when responses are not to their liking, tend to blame the other person.

Nevertheless, it a very worthy IDEAL.  A useful theme for life.
