This article shows that safety concerns are not  high enough priority during design and planning stages of nuclear power stations. Maybe it will be better in future but there  are 100’s of existing installations built on these sort of guidelines. Our healthy future is not assured if this is any indication.

“Japanese nuclear regulators trusted that the reactors at Fukushima Dai-ichi were safe from the worst waves an earthquake could muster based on a single-page memo from the plant operator nearly a decade ago.

In the Dec. 19, 2001 document — one double-sized page obtained by The Associated Press under Japan’s public records law — Tokyo Electric Power Co. rules out the possibility of a tsunami large enough to knock the plant offline and gives scant details to justify this conclusion, which proved to be wildly optimistic.

Regulators at the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, or NISA, had asked plant operators for assessments of their earthquake and tsunami preparedness. They didn’t mind the brevity of TEPCO’s response, and apparently made no moves to verify its calculations or ask for supporting documents.

“This is all we saw,” said Masaru Kobayashi, who now heads NISA’s quake-safety section. “We did not look into the validity of the content.”

The memo has Japanese text, boxes and numbers. It also has a tiny map of Japan indicating where historical earthquakes are believed to have struck. TEPCO considered five quakes, ranging from 8.0 to 8.6 magnitude, in northeastern Japan, and a 9.5 magnitude across the Pacific near Chile, as examples of possible tsunami-causing temblors.

Over the next nine years, despite advances in earthquake and tsunami science, the document gathered dust and was never updated.

When TEPCO finally did revisit tsunami preparedness last year, it was the most cursory of checks. And the conclusion was the same: The facility would remain dry under every scenario the utility envisioned.

“There was an attitude of disrespecting nature,” said Kobe University professor emeritus Katsuhiko Ishibashi, who has sat on government nuclear safety advisory panels.

The towering waves unleashed by the magnitude-9.0 earthquake on March 11 destroyed backup generators for several reactors’ cooling systems, and nuclear fuel in three reactors melted in the worst such crisis since Chernobyl. Workers have yet to bring the plant under control more than two months later.

Ishibashi said the problem with the plant’s tsunami preparedness didn’t lie with the limitations of science back in 2001. The problem was that TEPCO and regulators didn’t look at risk factors more carefully.

“It is critical to be prepared for what might happen even if the possibilities are small,” he said.

NISA’s request for tsunami risk assessments did not have the force of law and thus the operators’ responses technically were voluntary, but in Japan’s often-informal regulatory structure, regulators would expect such a request to be obeyed.”

Nuclear Crisis in Japan!

Internationally recognized symbol.

Image via Wikipedia

From: Nuclear Information and Resource Service
Global Research
At last we are getting some meaningful information that shows the seriousness of the Fukushima TEPCO Nuclear Power Station disaster. We are getting past the hedging, misinformation and cover-up stages. Serious is the word, likely CATASTROPHIC!  SCARY? Yes!

“Evidence is growing that the March 11 earthquake itself caused major damage to the Fukushima Daiichi reactors even before the accompanying tsunami knocked out offsite power and ensured the subsequent meltdowns.

According to Keiji Miyazaki, professor emeritus of nuclear reactor engineering at Osaka University, the earthquake likely damaged the high pressure coolant injection system, part of the emergency core cooling system at Unit 3 (as we reported below, it already has been believed that Unit 1 suffered severe damage from the earthquake). This system is supposed to work to cool the reactor even if power is lost, but at Unit 3, it didn’t. A review of pressure readings at Unit 3 indicate that there likely was a major steam leak that ultimately led to the speedy meltdown there. Article from Asahi.com here.

A rough translation of remarks by seismologist Katsuhiko Ishibashi (Emeritus Professor, Kobe University, which also suggest the earthquake itself heavily damaged the reactors, is available here.

Tomio Kawata, a research fellow of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan, said this week that the soil of a large area of northwest Japan – about 600 square kilometers – is contaminated with Cesium-137 at levels higher than prompted compulsory evacuation orders in the Soviet Union after Chernobyl (1.48 million becquerels per square meter). 700 square kilometers is contaminated with levels from 555,000-1.48 million becquerels per square meter.

Today, Tepco said that some 60 tons of radioactive water in one of its makeshift storage tanks – where it has been putting radioactive water gathered from the reactors and turbine buildings – has leaked out. The leak is apparently continuing.

Greenpeace is continuing its testing of marine life 12 miles and more from the Daiichi site, this week finding seaweed with contamination levels as high as 60 times legal limits.

UPDATE, 2:30 pm, Friday, May 20, 2011. The world’s media are shocked (shocked, we tell you…) that three Fukushima reactors melted down. Where have they been the past 10 weeks? Where did they think all that radiation was coming from? You know, that radiation that has caused the evacuation/relocation of people as far as 25 miles from the reactor site? Not to mention contamination of food, seawater, etc…..

Even Tepco admitted weeks ago that 35-50% of the fuel had melted at the three reactors (U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu had estimated 70% melt at Unit 1); the big difference now is that it seems as if all the fuel has melted and is now a large glop at the bottom of each reactor building.

We expect the media to be equally shocked when they finally realize that the evacuees will never be returning home and that the world now has another piece of itself rendered uninhabitable by nuclear power.

In actual news, evidence is growing that Unit 1’s meltdown was initiated by the earthquake and only exacerbated by the ensuing tsunami. Bloomberg reports that a radiation alarm inside Unit 1 went off before the tsunami even arrived, indicating coolant already had been lost and fuel melting had begun. If true, this could also require a re-assessment of how quickly reactors can melt down – that would mean meltdown had begun less than an hour after loss-of-coolant.

Masataka Shimizu, President of Tepco, resigned today after leading the company into the largest financial loss in Japanese history – about $15 Billion, and that’s before any compensation has been paid to the tens of thousands of people who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution says that the impact on the world’s oceans by Fukushima exceeds the impact of Chernobyl – in fact, the impact is 10 times higher. Woods Hole has received an emergency grant from the National Science Foundation to set baseline radionuclide levels in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and to monitor the impact of Fukushima fallout.

Recently released photos of the tsunami hitting Fukushima Daiichi are here

Discussion on the Tsunami risk plan is the topic of the next post, highlighting the lack of safety concerns, at least in the past, of companies and authorities when promoting there own agendas.

Obama, 9/11, Palestine boundaries, AGW, (Overview).

Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama...

Image via Wikipedia

It has been an interesting week.  More questions than answers.

I am in the middle of a serious discussion with another blog, involving some very astute persons who are taking me to task for believing stuff they see as conspiracy theories. Whereas, I see them believing in the real conspiracies, and see my beliefs as valid. Isn’t it always the way? I’ll come back to this.

Obama has seriously embarrassed himself by subconsciously writing ‘2008’ as the current year.  Not a big deal in itself, but the ramifications are.  Firstly it’s in a public document, there forever for everybody to chuckle or sneer at. (Maybe they will do the usual thing and cover it up, you know ‘whiteout’ and rewrite). Coming so soon after the belated release of his birth certificate, a document alleged to be fake by his detractors is unfortunate for him.  Secondly, it does raise a question or two about his thought processes, why 2008 slipped out of his subconsciousness, why he wasn’t concentrating, does he always need a script writer?  Has he been telling so many lies that it is difficult for him to separate reality from unreality?

That brings up a previous issue topic – Was Bin Laden still alive to be killed by the Seals on Obama’s orders, or was it someone else killed (unnecessarily), mutilated and immediately disposed of (to avoid identity problems). Either way there is a problem. If it wasn’t OBL it cannot be proven now. On the other hand, there is no convincing proof that it was OBL.   Many people are happy to believe their President, but many  are not. There are many instances of deception by the authorities, providing good grounds for suspicion.  Reference 2 earlier posts: ‘Is he really Dead this time?’;  ‘Fantasy as Reality’.

Anyway, what has been achieved? Nothing has changed, or if it has, it’s for the worse because of the fear, real or otherwise, of repercussions. The world is still at war against terror, and the terror is on ALL fronts, even from within.

9/11. This is one of the topics under dispute.  Hotly disputed,  by many for very good reasons, certainly one anyway. It is the supposed reason for the ‘war on terror’, meaning all the deaths, injuries and trauma, not to mention the gigantic financial costs, from the Afghanistan invasion and the current trouble with Pakistan. Worse, it is the reason used for placing American citizens in fear of being treated like terrorists and harassed by authorities.  The point of all this is that there is much evidence supporting the innocence of bin Laden, Al Qaeda or any Islamic jihadists of even participating in the 9/11 attacks, let alone planning them. My own views favour the evidence that the Israeli Mossad (secret service) are the main culprits, with complicity from US personnel and authorities. Impossible, some say. Yet others, including myself,  say it would have been impossible for the so-called Al Qaeda to have carried them out without inside assistance. This is a theme I am developing for this site.

Also this week, Obama has again made media front pages with his peace plan for the Palestinians and embarrassed Netanyahu by suggesting that Palestine be given their stolen land back. Later revised to the original boundaries being considered as a reference.  Russia expresses support for Palestine. This is going to be a classic case of ‘War of Words’ with much game-playing. Hopefully not war games. Given the close ties between Israel and the US, where the US is usually toeing the line, this particular unusual clash of ideas is surely nothing more than staging and rhetoric.

Then we come to another world issue – climate change.  Current ramifications are involving huge financial constraints and profits in various areas, while the pollution that is supposed to be reducing continues to spiral upwards. A major political issue in Australia, it is causing no end of grief to the politicians and endless blogging on the internet. This is another major theme for this site, but in order to provide convincing evidence, I need more time. The above page “Carbon Attack” is a work in progress.

This weeks interesting addition is the admission by an ex-warmist scientist, now a “denier” that AGW is not supported by real scientific evidence, but by false evidence. See my earlier post linked here.

Headlines from the Dustbin of History (Afghan Dept.)

Tomgram: Engelhardt,  posts this article:

One day in October 2001, a pilot for Northwest Airlines refused to let Arshad Chowdhury, a 25-year-old American Muslim (“with a dark complexion”) who had once worked as an investment banker in the World Trade Center, board his plane at San Francisco National Airport.  According to Northwest’s gate agents, Chowdhury writes in the Washington Post, “he thought my name sounded suspicious” even though “airport security and the FBI verified that I posed no threat.”  He sued.

Now, skip nearly a decade.  It’s May 6, 2011, and two New York-based African-American imams, a father and son, attempting to take an American Airlines flight from New York to Charlotte to attend a conference on “prejudice against Muslims,” were prevented from flying.  The same thing happened to two imams in Memphis “dressed in traditional long shirts and [with] beard,” heading for the same conference, when a pilot for Atlantic Southeast refused to fly with them aboard, even though they had been screened three times.

So how is the war in Afghanistan going almost 10 years later?  Or do you think that’s a non sequitur?

(

(

This is the never-ending story of the war, the one whose only variations involve whether, faced with such deaths, U.S. military spokespeople will stonewall and deny, launch an “investigation” that goes nowhere, or offer a pro forma apology.  When it came to the death of that girl recently, an apology was indeed issued, but her father made the essential point: “They killed my 12-year-old daughter and my brother-in-law and then told me, ‘We are sorry.’  What does it mean?  What pain can be cured by this word ‘sorry’?”

So, do we really know the full story, one which Tom says is ongoing and unchanging forever?

Former “alarmist” scientist says Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) based in false science

The Keeling Curve of atmospheric CO 2 concentr...

Image via Wikipedia

Thanks to TIP for this post:  Also to  Bruce McQuain  for his article.

David Evans is a scientist. He has also worked in the heart of the AGW machine.  He consulted full-time for the Australian Greenhouse Office (now the Department of Climate Change) from 1999 to 2005, and part-time 2008 to 2010, modeling Australia’s carbon in plants, debris, mulch, soils, and forestry and agricultural products. He has six university degrees, including a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. The other day he said:

The debate about global warming has reached ridiculous proportions and is full of micro-thin half-truths and misunderstandings. I am a scientist who was on the carbon gravy train, understands the evidence, was once an alarmist, but am now a skeptic.

 The politics:

The whole idea that carbon dioxide is the main cause of the recent global warming is based on a guess that was proved false by empirical evidence during the 1990s. But the gravy train was too big, with too many jobs, industries, trading profits, political careers, and the possibility of world government and total control riding on the outcome. So rather than admit they were wrong, the governments, and their tame climate scientists, now outrageously maintain the fiction that carbon dioxide is a dangerous pollutant.

He makes clear he understands that CO2 is indeed a “greenhouse gas”, and makes the point that if all else was equal then yes, more CO2 in the air should and would mean a warmer planet. But that’s where the current “science” goes off the tracks. It is built on an assumption that is false.

The science:

But the issue is not whether carbon dioxide warms the planet, but how much.

Most scientists, on both sides, also agree on how much a given increase in the level of carbon dioxide raises the planet’s temperature, if just the extra carbon dioxide is considered. These calculations come from laboratory experiments; the basic physics have been well known for a century.

The disagreement comes about what happens next.

The planet reacts to that extra carbon dioxide, which changes everything. Most critically, the extra warmth causes more water to evaporate from the oceans. But does the water hang around and increase the height of moist air in the atmosphere, or does it simply create more clouds and rain? Back in 1980, when the carbon dioxide theory started, no one knew. The alarmists guessed that it would increase the height of moist air around the planet, which would warm the planet even further, because the moist air is also a greenhouse gas. [emphasis mine]

But it didn’t increase the height of the moist air around the planet as subsequent studies have shown since that time. However, that theory or premise became the heart of the modeling that was done by the alarmist crowd.

This is exactly what I have been dreaming about, a confirmation of all the “truther’s” arguments, from an authentic source. All my plans to outline what I deemed the truth on this website have been superseded by this post. Halelulia!

I may still continue the ‘Carbon Attack’ posting because there is much detail about how temperature figures have been fudged and people being dishonest, but it not so urgent.

Police confirm Fairfax journalist’s arrest

This is a question of whether justice is being done.

The following extract is from the ABC News website, an article by Ashlynne McGhee and staff.

Police have confirmed they arrested a journalist and seized his computer on Queensland’s Gold Coast yesterday, after he published a story about a Facebook security flaw.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay today likened the issue to receiving stolen goods, but refused to go into details of Fairfax journalist Ben Grubb’s case.

“Let me give you an analogy. Someone breaks into a house and they steal a TV and they give that TV to you, and you know that TV is stolen, and you apply it to your own use … that’s receiving stolen property,” he said.

“I’m not going to go into the details of the specifics of the case.”

Grubb was arrested at the AusCERT IT security conference after he wrote the Facebook story for Fairfax.

“I’ve been arrested by Queensland Police for a story I wrote today. They’ve also seized my iPad,” he said on Twitter yesterday.

His article told how a presenter at a pre-conference event gained access to privacy-protected photos in another person’s Facebook account. The article was accompanied by a photo lifted from the account.

I am assuming that, given there is no mention, the presenter has not been also arrested.

The presenter illegally gained access to another person’s account. In the words of the police, he “stole the TV”.

Yet the reporter who published the incident is being punished for making the theft known. Certainly using the “TV” as evidence, but without taking it, just making a facsimile of it.

It seems to me that the presenter is far more the guilty person. My next question is – “why was the arrest made over such a seemingly trivial incident?” If it isn’t seen as trivial by the police, why is the presenters ‘crime’ not the greater one?

Is this the sign of a police state scenario?

Mercury in Vaccines

Reports of autism cases per 1,000 children gre...

Mercury,  in the form of Thimerosal, is used as a preservative commonly in multi-dose vials of vaccines.
The article linked below is directed at Florida, US, law making and may be area specific.

Thimerosal  is apparently used in some instances, in Australia, referenced here:

Combined diphtheria and tetanus vaccine, CDT, CSL 50 micrograms,
Adult diphtheria and tetanus vaccine, ADT, CSL 50 micrograms,
Diphtheria vaccine, CSL 50 micrograms,
Hepatitis B, Engerix B Adult, GlaxoSmithKline <2 micrograms,
*Influenza vaccines, Fluarix, Influvac, Fluvax,
GlaxoSmithKline, Solvay, CSL 50 micrograms,
Japanese encephalitis vaccine, JE Vax, CSL

There is little doubt that Thimerosal is a potentially dangerous additive, in particular relating to vaccination of very young babies.

I believe that any claims of unproven links between Thimerosal and autism are being made with influence from the pharma manufacturers, and should not be trusted.

The following is from the  Sott.net article by  Neev M. Arnell.

Three recent studies, in particular, show the symptoms of mercury poisoning are nearly identical to those of autism, which strongly suggests that mercury in vaccines is at least a major factor in autism (http://www.naturalnews.com/031678_m…).Mercury is already a known neurotoxin that causes cancer, damages DNA, alters proper embryonic development, and disrupts the immune system, but researchers at the University of Brazil recently released a study showing that mercury also causes serious brain damage, and is linked to autism and other developmental diseases in children and Alzheimer’s disease in adults (http://www.naturalnews.com/031870_f…).

New study: Nations requiring the most vaccines tend to have the worst infant mortality rates

World infant mortality rates in 2008. source data

Image via Wikipedia

Here we have a very interesting concept, supporting the no-vaccination argument.
This is a study better assessed by  (unbiassed) medical professionals, but nevertheless is of some direct support to mothers pondering the choices. Further reading, linked in the article should be helpful.

(NaturalNews) A new study, published in Human and Experimental Toxicology (http://het.sagepub.com/content/earl…), a peer-reviewed journal indexed by the National Library of Medicine, found that nations with higher (worse) infant mortality rates tend to give their infants more vaccine doses. For example, the United States requires infants to receive 26 vaccines– the most in the world — yet more than six U.S. infants die per every 1000 live births. In contrast, Sweden and Japan administer 12 vaccines to infants, the least amount, and report less than three deaths per 1000 live births. The authors of the study, Neil Z. Miller and Dr. Gary Goldman, conducted a literature review to determine the immunization schedules for the United States and all 33 nations with better infant mortality rates than the United States. The total number of vaccine doses specified for infants aged less than one year was then determined for each country. The 34 nations were then organized into data pairs consisting of total number of vaccine doses specified for their infants and infant mortality rates. A scatter plot of the data pairs provided evidence of a positive correlation: infant mortality rates and vaccine doses tend to increase together.Link

Fukushima FUEL MELT confirmed

Internationally recognized symbol.

Image via Wikipedia

There has been little recent information in the news about the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant run by TEPCO in Japan.  A quietness that seemed ominous, even if it was somewhat over-shadowed by other events.

This is a bit ironic, given that nuclear radiation is positively a real and frightening reality.

The information offered below highlights four aspects:

1. The radiation emissions are high level and extremely dangerous.

2. Much important information has been kept from the public. It should be a criminal offence to withhold health-related information from the public.

3. TEPCO and whoever are assisting, are really struggling to cope.  A world-wide catastrophic event is in progress and is not being successfully contained.

4. Nuclear power plants ARE dangerous, potentially in all cases, demonstrably in others. The pro-nuclear industry can not be trusted to be honest. (Not that they are alone in that category!).

From ‘World Nuclear News‘:

Investigations at unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi suggest that most of the fuel in the reactor core melted and dropped to the bottom of the reactor vessel in the early stages of the accident. Work has started on installing a structure to cover the damaged reactor building.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) said that following the installation and calibration of two new water level gauges, water level readings suggest that most of the fuel in unit 1 had earlier melted and fallen to the bottom of the reactor vessel, where it has solidified and been kept adequately cooled. The company said that most of this core melt probably occurred within 16 hours after the unit automatically shutdown when the earthquake struck on 11 March.

The WNN article can be read here.

Further relevant information from asahi.com:

The radioactivity level inside the reactor building is very high, with a reading of up to 2,000 millisieverts per hour, an extreme danger to workers. That reading was taken May 13 at a site near a pipe leading to the pressure vessel at the southeastern part of the ground floor of the No. 1 reactor building.

The reading was the highest so far of the checks of radiation in the air conducted after the accident.

TEPCO must look for points where the radiation level is low in the building so that technicians can stay long enough to install pipes.

It also needs to work out a way to deter the flow of the highly contaminated water in the basement into the ocean.

Full article linked here.

And from Chris Marterson:

Well, it now turns out that much of my worst fears and about Fukushima have been confirmed with the news that TEPCO has finally admitted that reactor #1 has experienced a meltdown event that may have breached the primary containment vessel. Further, truly alarming levels of radiation are now being reported in and around Tokyo.

“I have already said that I am not involved in the 11 September attacks in the United States. … Whoever committed the act of 11 September are not the friends of the American people. I have already said that we are against the American system, not against its people, whereas in these attacks the common American people have been killed. ….The Western media is unleashing such a baseless propaganda, which makes us surprised, but it reflects on what is in their hearts and gradually they themselves become captive of this propaganda. …. Terror is the most dreaded weapon in the modern age and the Western media is mercilessly using it against its own people.”
