“(NaturalNews) As people are turning away from chemical ingredients in everything from cleaning products to beauty products, they are also turning to chemical-free foods by growing food in their own backyards. In order to keep your homegrown produce as free from harmful chemicals as possible while keeping crop-destroying pests to a minimum use natural pest control methods. If prevention doesn’t get the job done, try some home remedies first. As a last resort, you can turn to organic pesticide–just make sure all the ingredients are listed and they are all things you are not afraid to put on your food.

Prevention

Preventing pest problems before they start is the best way get ahead of the problem (http://eartheasy.com/grow_nat_pest_…). You can do this by following some commonsense guidelines, such as pulling out any weak or already infected plants, building healthy soil to nurture strong plant growth, disinfecting tools after working on infected plants and minimizing breeding grounds for pests by getting rid of non-essential areas of the garden that might serve as a habitat. It is also useful to interplant and rotate crops because it will stop spreading or reinfestation of the many pests that are specific to one type of plant.

Fight nature with nature

Naturally attracting beneficial insects to your garden is one way to fight pests. These insects will prey on plant-damaging pests or their larvae and promote a healthier environment for your crops. Different predator species have different prey, so the type of predator insect you want to promote in your garden will depend on the type of pest problem you are dealing with.

Two commonly used predator insects include ladybugs and lacewings. (http://eartheasy.com/grow_nat_pest_…). Ladybugs eat whiteflies scale, mites and aphids and are attracted to tansy, members of the daisy family and yarrow (http://eartheasy.com/grow_nat_pest_…). Lacewings are also attracted yarrow as well as goldenrod, asters and black-eyed susan. They eat aphids and their larvae eat aphids as well as other varieties of insects.

University of Rhode Island Horticulture Program recommends dedicating five to ten percent of your garden space to growing flowers for beneficial insects like lady bugs and lacewings (http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/sh…).

URI suggestion for annual flowers to encourage beneficial insects:

Spring: alyssum and buckwheat
Early summer: coriander, dill, yarrow and buckwheat
Mid-summer: coriander, fennel, dill, caraway, black-eyed susan, yarrow and dwarf sunflowers
Late summer: coriander, dill, black-eyed susan and dwarf sunflowers
Fall: alyssum, buckwheat and dwarf sunflowers

Homemade pest deterrents

If pests are still problematic homemade pesticides may provide the solution (http://www.motherearthnews.com/Orga…). Ants, for example, are deterred by vinegar and coffee grounds, aphids by garlic and cayenne pepper, and slugs by eggshells.

There are as many different home pest concoctions as there are pests. Using garlic and onions, according to Mother Earth News, is just one way to kill aphids and apple borers, for instance. All you have to do is grind up raw onions or garlic into a puree, soak it warm water overnight and strain. The liquid can then be sprayed on roses, fruit trees, and flowers (http://www.motherearthnews.com/Orga…).

Commercial pesticides

Organic pesticides will often use ingredients similar to those in the homemade kind and have the added benefit of convenience. But consumers beware, just because a pesticide is labeled organic or natural does not mean that it is harmless to the environment.

A 2010 study from the University of Guelph revealed that some organic pesticides can have a higher environmental impact than conventional pesticides because the organic product may require larger doses.

“We found the mineral oil organic pesticide had the most impact on the environment because it works by smothering the aphids and therefore requires large amounts to be applied to the plants,” said Rebecca Hallett, professor of environmental sciences at the University of Guelph in Canada (http://bit.ly/d5S6fx).

Organic pesticides on the market often also only list active ingredients. But the active ingredients only comprise 1-2 percent of the solution, leaving 98-99 percent unknown. Nearly 4,000 inert ingredients–including several hundred that are considered hazardous under other federal rules–are used in agricultural and residential pesticides, according to Environmental Health News (http://www.environmentalhealthnews….).

“In terms of making pest management decisions and trying to do what is best for the environment, it’s important to look at every compound and make a selection based on the environmental impact quotient rather than if it’s simply natural or synthetic,” said Hallett.

For those who do want to use organic pesticides, one that is effective against a number of pesticide-resistant insects and does not harm beneficial insects is neem oil. Also, being that it is biodegradable, it does not leave a residue on the final produce. Nature Neem offers a 100 percent cold pressed neem oil http://www.natureneem.com/index_fic…), so there are no other ingredients. Because it is oil it requires an emulsifier in order to mix with water, but it is possible to use household hand washing or dishwashing soaps.

Pharm Solutions Inc. is a company that also sidesteps the unknown ingredients pitfall by listing all ingredients on the label. Its Veggie Pharm insecticide and fungicide (http://pharmsolutionsinc.com/veggie…) is made with the pure oils of cottonseed, garlic, peppermint and rosemary. The inactive ingredients include non-GMO canola oil, food grade oleic acid, and USP grade glycerin and carbonic acid monopotassium salt and carrot juice, and the remaining 83.3 percent is water. It has the added benefit that an emulsifier is already added, so it is ready to use.

Is he REALLY DEAD this time?

US propaganda leaflet used in Afghanistan.

Image via Wikipedia

This title, of course, refers to  the announced death of  Osama Bin Laden.

Because we are already on the topic of ‘political spin‘, (previous post), it is appropriate to post this, perhaps prematurely, but it can be updated easily.

There is an encyclopedic amount of knowledge, or at least statements, about Bin Laden, 9/11 atrocities and, of course, the ‘war on terror‘.

I am itching to buy into this subject and am not prepared to wait until a), more information is available and b), I have something conclusive to say.

So, to start the ball rolling:

According to many, Bin Laden has been dead for many years. At least 2 other times his death has been reported.

Certainly he has not been active in any noticeable way. Al Qaeda, according to the press, military and the leaders of the ‘war on terror’, has been active but Bin Laden himself has been basically absent from the public gaze. His alleged genius at instigating 9/11 type terrorist activities stopped in 2001. Not that he admitted 9/11 involvement, in fact, he strongly denied it. A video purporting to his admission of planning of 9/11 is recognisable as false.

So, for this post, at the moment I am collecting more information and calling for questions. To be assessed and debated to see where the truth is more likely to sit. The information and references copied from other sources impress me and are representative of my cynical attitude towards the US authorities who have a track record of misleading its citizens, to say the least!

The blog ‘Sott.net’ has this to say:

The circumstances surrounding Osama bin Laden’s reported death raise urgent questions over how the US is so sure it got its man.

US officials have said DNA testing has proved the al Qaeda leader was killed in a villa in Pakistan.

They have also identified him by facial recognition.

But photographs of Bin Laden after his reported death have not been released.

The fact his body was buried at sea has so far only added to the speculation, although as a Muslim, he had to be laid to rest as quickly as possible.

Mike Adams of  ‘Natural News‘ contributes the following in his email to members:

IMHO it is a brilliant assessment!

You just gotta love the whole media / White House circus over the Osama Bin Laden announcements. Remember when we were told we had to go after these dangerous terrorists so we could be safer? Remember when we were told that the terror alerts had to be put on orange and red because Bin Laden was “living in a cave” and plotting to bomb us?

Well now that the White House insists they’ve killed Bin Laden, where’s the celebration of freedom and safety? Why aren’t we firing the TSA and reversing the Patriot Act? Isn’t the danger now over? Can we bring bottled water back on airplanes again?

Instead, the government now says that killing Osama Bin Laden makes America MORE dangerous because his cohorts might seek “revenge.”

Huh? Wait a sec… so killing Bin Laden makes America less safe? Wasn’t the entire sales job on this supposed to be that killing Bin Laden would make us more safe?

Check out the logic here: George W. Bush said if we don’t kill Bin Laden, we won’t be safe. Obama says now that we DID kill Bin Laden, things are even less safe. So apparently, according to the U.S. government, killing them or not killing produces exactly the same result. We’re all in danger, they insist, no matter who they kill.

Do you see the total perpetual war con job America has been sold over the years, spanning multiple presidents? There are no conditions under which we can go back to being “safe and secure,” you see. There is no list of outlaws that can be taken out so that the government announces “There, now we’re safe. All the bad guys are gone.” Nope, instead we get this perpetual war setup that keeps the munitions manufacturers rolling in dough while our soldiers keep coming home in body bags. It is a complete con job, and it’s all being used to strip away our constitutional rights and freedoms, too.

Anyway, all this is just one more sign that our world has gone completely and utterly mad… and the whole thing is entirely unsustainable.

There’s plenty more to come, I just wanted to get started.

So, I will return to the many other questions, ramifications, choices, effects on various countries and people, etc. very soon.

In the meantime, please comment!

Political Spin

A bit of humour, a classic example of information manipulation.

This story was emailed to me by an associate. (Presumably not exceeding copyright or ethical boundaries as it was made public by a family member).

“Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in  southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family  tree. She discovered that Congressman Harry Reid’s great-great uncle,  Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana  in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid  share this common  ancestor.

The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing  on the gallows  in Montana   territory:

On  the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this  inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial  Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by  Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.’

So  Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about  their great-great uncle.

Believe  it or not, Harry Reid’s staff sent back the following biographical  sketch for her genealogy research:

“Remus Reid  was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory … His business empire grew  to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate  dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted  several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to  resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a  vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In  1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his  honor when the platform upon which he was standing  collapsed..”

NOW THAT’s how it’s done, Folks!

That’s real  POLITICAL  SPIN ”

The Dangers of the Medical Industrial Complex

Example of promotional "freebies" gi...

A reference to this Sott.net post is the sort of thing I do.

Not original but something I feel compelled to assist in making public.

The areas of inadequate or inappropriate medical procedures are a serious issue. Without allocating blame, it is fairly obvious that the ‘system’ is in  dire need of improvement. It’s a typical situation of the ‘tail wagging the dog’.

The patient’s wellbeing is not highest on the priorities, where it should be!

Here is an extract:

Your doctors think they make decisions based on medical evidence.

But they don’t!

In fact, half of medical evidence is hidden from your doctors. And the half that’s hidden is the half that shows drugs don’t work.

The bad news is that drug companies are not policed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the way they should be. A drug should be proven both effective and safe BEFORE it is prescribed to millions of people.

Sadly, that often isn’t the case.
