The Sun and Skin Cancer: Examining the Truths, Pseudo-Truths and Lies of Mainstream Science

A topic that has been on my ‘to-do’ list for ages. From ‘Wakeup World’  By Dr. Michelle Kmiec.

Hopefully this throws some light  [ 🙂 ] on the subject and reveals some truths.

Readers please comment if you disagree with any of this information.

My apologies to the source blog and author for reproducing the whole article. Hopefully readers will be impressed by this post and check out your blog, linked here.

So we hear the sun is good you… and then the sun is bad for you… and then later the sun is good for you again (or is bad for you now… I just can’t keep it straight).

Isn’t this game of ‘good-bad-good’ played on just about every topic under the sun (terrible pun I know…sorry about that)?

We are a society immersed in fear… fear… and more fear. So the sun being another object of fear isn’t any big surprise.

The notion that we, people that live on the surface of this planet, should cover-up and stay out of the sun as much as possible has always struck a strange cord with me. I could believe something like this if we, in fact, lived underground and were nocturnal cave dwellers; only to come out at night to work and play.

But we are not nocturnal by nature. We sleep at night and are active during the day. Did nature get this wrong? Could this perhaps be nature’s biggest joke on us? Or are we the ones who are confused?

There are reasons why we are active during the day rather than at night, and our physiology proves it:

1.  The pineal gland provides melatonin at night and serotonin during the day.

2.  We have excellent day vision and poor night vision.

3.  Vitamin D is a vitamin-like hormone that our body makes only with direct sun exposure.

4.  Not to mention that we are “programmed” to be drawn to the sun. Don’t we all just love that warm sunny day? Doesn’t it do absolute wonders on your state of mind?

Nonetheless, we’ve been told to stay out of the sun, cover up, and lather on the sunscreen on. And aren’t we totally brain washed regarding sunscreen? We are told that if we don’t put on the sunscreen, we’ll get wrinkles and/or get skin cancer. Right? Sound familiar?

And now the latest myth about being out in the sun… it is becoming more dangerous due to the shrinking ozone layer causing the sun rays to be stronger than ever before, of course causing more skin cancer. But that’s another topic all together.

UVA and UVB Rays:

Before we go into more detail, here’s a little refresher on UVB and UVA rays.

“New Information Dissolves Illusions About Vaccines—And They’re All Illusions”

Some more provocative claims that the mainstream theories and practices regarding vaccinations need challenging. Undoubtedly, this is a very contentious issue. To unconditionally brand all vaccinations as unnecessary and /or unsafe would seem wildly and willfully incorrect and unintelligent. This may or not be the thrust of the ‘VacTruth’ organization and this particular book.

The point I am comfortable in putting forward is that there is much wrong, in general, with the vaccination industry, its practices and motivations. This article offers more evidence that this is indeed the case. Until the valid questions about:

  • the quality of vaccines,
  • the efficacy of vaccines,
  • the specific need for specific vaccines,
  • the safety of vaccinations,
  • the honesty of the drug companies,
  • the validity of testing trials,
  • the honesty and impartiality of the regulating organizations,
  • the relativity of profit making and patient safety agendas,
  • and the effectiveness and honesty of adverse incident reporting procedures

are independently assessed and appropriately actioned, these questions need to be repeatedly asked and publicised.

I would also highlight the points made about sanitation, clean and healthy foods and natural remedies, the importance of which are largely overlooked in the agenda-driven vaccination promotions.

Dissolving Illusions is a powerful new book written by Roman Bystrianyk and Suzanne Humphries, MD

This article from  ‘Vactruth’ , by Jennifer Hutchinson, about a new book by Susan Humphries MD & Roman Bystrianyk titled “Dissolving Illusions”, deserves some attention.

There’s a new book out. It’s called Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and the Forgotten History. The biggest illusion is quite simple and is the basis for the entire book and what the book ultimately proves. Before I continue, answer this true-or-false question:

Throughout history, vaccines have been responsible for the increase in life expectancy, and drastically reduced the death toll from infectious diseases.

If you said false, you are correct. Vaccines were not responsible for the increase in life expectancy or the major drop in mortality from infectious diseases.

Another question.

True or false: Clean water, nutrition, hygiene, and sanitation were responsible for the eradication of all of many infectious diseases.

This is true, which Dissolving Illusions clearly shows. This single fact makes the following question easy to answer.

True or false: The vaccine program in this country is based on a false premise.

Absolutely true. Really think about this. Diseases like cholera and typhoid all but vanished before the introduction of any vaccine. Therefore, vaccines could not have been responsible for the eradication of these diseases.

But wait. I was told my whole life that vaccines are absolutely necessary to protect us from awful diseases. How can it not be true?

It’s Basic History 101

In the 1800s and 1900s, many people in the United States lived in poverty and filth. In small, overcrowded, dark houses with rats, roaches, mosquitoes, and other vermin. Streets were filled with sewage and garbage and dead animals—often as much as two to three feet deep in places like New York City. Food and drinking water were diseased.

People were malnourished. They didn’t have clean running water and flush toilets. When they became sick, they ended up in hospitals that were also dirty and unsanitary, lacking in basic hygiene such as handwashing and instrument sterilization and isolating the sick.

Many worked long hours in dirty, unsafe conditions, without fresh air, exercise, and rest. Even children labored to the point of illness and sometimes death. Epidemics were rampant, with millions dying from diseases like typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, diphtheria, pertussis, scarlet fever, measles, yellow fever, tuberculosis, puerperal fever, and smallpox. Mortality was high, and life expectancy was low.

This is the forgotten history. This is what was responsible for the spread of disease. This is the truth.

Then came the Sanitation Revolution. Everything changed. Sewage and waste was properly disposed of. Clean drinking water was mandated. Food was inspected and handled properly so it was no longer contaminated. Milk was pasteurized. Labor laws were passed to protect workers. Basic hygiene was implemented. In many countries, life became cleaner, safer, and better.

Another piece of the forgotten history is the lost remedies. Vitamins, cinnamon, garlic, echinacea, jicama, fresh juice, apple cider vinegar, cod liver oil, silver, and other natural supplements were used to treat infectious diseases. And guess what? They worked very well.

The result? By 1940, deaths from measles, scarlet fever, pertussis, and diphtheria were practically a thing of the past. Deaths from scarlet fever—a bigger killer—were almost unheard of by the early 1900s, even before antibiotics were used to treat it. Tuberculosis, pneumonia, flu … same thing. When they surfaced, they were much milder. Mortality was rare. That’s a fact.

And this is important. This happened during a time when there was an almost zero vaccination rate.

9/11 MUST SEE: “I can prove that it was not an airplane” that hit the Pentagon – Major General Albert N. Stubblebine (updated 7/24/2013)

Already there is enough information posted on, or linked by, this blog to convince most people that the 9/11 attacks involved  orchestration  and collusion by/within the USA.

But the world ‘goes on’ in its merry way, fighting wars and grabbing control and resources from their rightful owners, based on the lies that the US was attacked and had to be thereafter “defended” by any means and costs and whatever cost to the rest of the world and even its own citizens.

So here is yet another presentation,  from ‘Conscious Life News’, by . What follows is a part of the source article, enough to whet your appetite for meaningful information. Please refer to the source article for full information.

Albert N. Stubblebine III is a retired Major General in the United States Army. He was the commanding general of the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command from 1981 to 1984.  In this compelling interview, Stubblemine reveals the following information (what he calls dots) about the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001:

  • Stubblebine initially believed the official story regarding 9/11.
  • Then, he saw the hole in the Pentagon. He can prove that the Pentagon was not hit by a Boeing 757. DOT.
  • All of the sensors around the Pentagon were turned off except one. That one sensor captured an image of the object the hit the Pentagon.  It looked like a missile.  But, after he went public, the imagery was changed to look like a plane. DOT.
  • The collapse of the twin towers was caused by controlled demolition – not the fuel from the airplane. DOT.
  • Larry Silverstein, the lease holder of the WTC complex, admitted that that building 7, which was not hit by a plane and had only a small fire, was intentionally “pulled” – which is phraseology used for controlled demolition.  DOT.
  • All of the air defense systems around Washington DC were turned off that day. DOT.
  • Also on 9/11, there was an exercise designed to mimic an attack on the towers by airplanes.  DOT.
  • When you connect the DOTs, the picture says that what we were told by the media was not the real story.
  • Stubblebine, visibly upset, describes how he felt when he realized the truth about his government after having a strong belief in his country since early childhood: “My belief system was so strong from age five when I could remember standing on a parade ground at attention with not anybody telling me to do that – at West Point.”

Below are some notes from the interview including a partial transcript. (Be sure to watch all the way to the the end, where you can see the deep hurt on his face when he recalled the moment that he realized that his government, the government that he proudly served for over 30 years, was not what he thought was):

5:15 Stubblebine hears about the 9/11 attacks: “We’re at war.”

6:00 Stubblebine said there must have been intelligence information to know that an attack was coming and we didn’t see the signals.  Somebody missed it.

6:35 He initially believed that it was terrorist attack done by other forces: “Not my government.”

7:45 Stubblebine  then saw a photo of the Pentagon showing the hole in the Pentagon supposedly made by a Boeing 757.  ”Something’s wrong. There is something wrong with this picture…”

8:30 “Well there was something wrong. And, so I analyzed it not just photographically, I did measurements… I checked the plane, the length of the nose, where the wings were… I took measurements of the Pentagon – the depth of the destruction in the Pentagon.”

9:05 “Conclusion: airplane did not make that hole.”

9:10” I went public at the time. I am the highest ranking officer, I believe, that has ever gone public… The official story was not true.”

9:25 “I was very careful to not say what it was because I couldn’t prove it. I was careful to say that it was not the airplane that did that, because I can prove that it was not the airplane.”

9:45 “In the hole, however, was a turbine that looked like a turbine from the missile… I can’t prove that, I don’t know. But there was something there that did not look like the engine from an airplane, but did look like a turbine from a missile.”

10:10 “Later I saw another photograph taken by one of the sensors on the outside of the Pentagon. Now, all of the sensors had been turned off, which is kind of interesting – isn’t it? That day, why would all of the sensors around the Pentagon be turned off? That’s strange. I don’t care what the excuse is.  That’s strange. There happened to be one that apparently did not get turned off. And in that picture, coming in, flying into the Pentagon, you see this object, and it obviously hits the Pentagon.  When you look at it, it does NOT look like an airplane.  Sometime later, after I’d gone public, that imagery was changed. It got a new suit around it that now looked like an airplane. But, when you take the suit off, it looks more like a missile – not like an airplane.”

11:30 “Let me go back to the next very important piece of information.  The amount of energy to melt the girders – the steel in the tower – cannot be gotten to a melt point with the fuel that was in the airplane.  Not possible!  So, any melting did not occur as a result of the hit from the airplane.  Point. I call it dot. OK?  DOT.”

12:10 “When you look at the tower coming down, what you see at each floor is successive puffs of smoke: puff, puff, puff, puff… all the way down. What are the puffs of smoke coming from? Well, they claim that they are from the collapsing floors… No. No. No. Those puffs of smoke are controlled demolitions. That’s exactly what they are, because that’s exactly how they work. And so, the fact that the airplane hit, it did, it did not cause that collapse of the building.  The collapse of the building was caused by controlled demolition.”

13:05 “Fact: Building 7 – Silverberg, I believe is the name of the owner…” (his name is actually Larry Silverstein), “…was on a video and you could see Building 7.  And, there was a fire in Building 7, there’s no doubt about that. No airplane hit it.  I assume that the fire came from some debris, but I’m not even sure of that.  But, in the lower right-hand corner of the building was a fire – not a very big fire. It didn’t appear to be out of control. It certainly was in a small part of the building.  But, then he is heard on the video and he says Pull it.  Then, the building collapsed. What does pull it mean?  Let me tell you.  That’s the order for controlled demolition.  That is the phraseology that’s used for blowing up something.”

CLN Editorial note: Stubblebine got mixed up with his facts regarding the Siverstein video, which you can see here.  The video is a PBS interview with Silverstein that was shot sometime after 9/11.   The footage of Building 7 going down is historical footage, not live during the interview.  Nonetheless, Silverstein does say that he gave the order to “pull it.”

15:00 All of the air defense systems in that part of the country had been turned off that day.  All of the air defense systems had been turned off… Why would you turn off all of the air defense systems on that particular day unless you knew that something was going to happen? It’s a dot.  It’s information. But, it’s strange that everything got turned off that day.  DOT.”

15:50 There was an exercise that was designed for the air defense systems that was an attack on the towers by airplanes.  Isn’t that strange that we had an exercise that mimicked what really happened?  Strange that we had planned an exercise that was exactly what happened. And, at the same time, the air defense systems were turned off.  Don’t you find that strange? I find that really strange?  DOT.  Just a piece of information.

16:50 “But how does it correlate with everything else? So, you see the dots.  You have all of these dots. They’re just bits of information.  But, that’s exactly how the intelligence world works.  You get a bit of information here. A bit here, and a bit here. And, pretty soon you’ve got a picture. To me, what does the picture say?  The picture says that what we heard and were told in the newspapers, the media, was not the real story. There’s enough doubt in the official story where the story is absolutely not consistent with what happened. They paint a different picture than the one that was given to the media.”

17:45 “How easy is it for you to shift your belief system from ‘I totally believe in my government’ to ‘Oh My God! What’s going on?’  That’s exactly where I went in all of this. Because, my belief system was so strong from age five when I could remember standing on a parade ground at attention with not anybody telling me to do that – at West Point. I did it because I wanted to do it – because I believed! And then going to the military academy and serving, defending…

18:30 The real story was, I have a question I guess. The real story to me is: who was the real enemy? Who participated in this? Who planned this attack? Why was it planned? Were the real terrorists the people in Arab clothing? Or, were the real people that planned this the people sitting in the authority in the White House?

Grotesque Plan for Detroit: Fleece Working People to Save the Banks

Might I suggest that the writing is on the wall?

English: The West Canfield Historic District, ...

English: The West Canfield Historic District, along West Canfield Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, United States, is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). NRHP reference numbers 71000433, 97001092 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

This ‘nsnbc’ article by Ellen H. Brown is not just about the Detroit debacle. It is representative of the global financial mess and the agenda to destroy the security of the world’s citizens future, financially, socially and politically.

A look at who benefits, reveals the banking cartel as the winners, also the politician controllers (Congress in this case), unwittingly providing the bankers with unlimited power in their greed for personal benefits, probably only short term but they do not realize that, and the people are the losers as the whole social structure collapses in the very manner that the Detroit district has.

Particularly note the part played by ‘derivatives’ in the banking system structure. For the bankers it is a case of ‘us or them’, but ‘God forgive them’ (the bankers and Congress), for they know not what they do. Or if they do know, they should not be forgiven and hopefully will not be!

Bank of America Corp. and UBS AG have been given priority over other bankruptcy claimants, meaning chiefly the pensioners, for payments due on interest rate swaps they entered into with the city.
Interest rate swaps – the exchange of interest rate payments between counterparties – are sold by Wall Street banks as a form of insurance, something municipal governments “should” do to protect their loans from an unanticipated increase in rates. Unlike ordinary insurance, however, swaps are actually just bets; and if the municipality loses the bet, it can owe the house, and owe big. The swap casino is almost entirely unregulated, and it is a rigged game that the house virtually always wins. Interest rate swaps are based on the LIBOR rate, which has now been proven to be manipulated by the rate-setting banks; and they were a major contributor to Detroit’s bankruptcy.

Derivative claims are considered “secured” because the players must post collateral to play. They get not just priority but “super-priority” in bankruptcy, meaning they go first before all others, a deal pushed through by Wall Street in the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2005. Meanwhile, the municipal workers, whose pensions are theoretically protected under the Michigan Constitution, are classified as “unsecured” claimants who will get the scraps after the secured creditors put in their claims. The banking casino, it seems, trumps even the state constitution. The banks win and the workers lose once again.

Systemically Dangerous Institutions Are Moved to the Head of the Line

The argument for the super-priority of derivative claims is that nonpayment on these bets represents a “systemic risk” to the financial scheme. Derivative bets are cross-collateralized
and are so inextricably entwined in a $600-plus trillion house of cards that the whole financial scheme could go down if the betting scheme were to collapse. Instead of banning or regulating this very risky casino, Congress has been persuaded by the masterminds of Wall Street that it needs to be preserved at all costs.

The same tortured logic has been used to justify the fact that the
federal government deigned to bail out Wall Street but not Detroit.
Supposedly, the mega-banks pose a systemic risk and Detroit doesn’t. On July 29th, former Obama administration economist Jared Bernstein pursued this line of reasoning on his blog, writing: [T]he correct motivation for federal bailouts
— meaning some combination of managing a bankruptcy, paying off creditors (though often with a haircut), or providing liquidity in cases where that’s the issue as opposed to insolvency – is systemic risk.
The failure of large, major banks, two out of the big three auto
companies, the secondary market for housing – all of these pose
unacceptably large risks to global financial markets, and thus the global economy, to a major industry, including its upstream and downstream suppliers, and to the national housing sector.

Because a) there’s not much of a case that Detroit is systemically
connected in those ways, and b) Chapter 9 of the bankruptcy code appears to provide an adequate way for it to deal with its insolvency, I don’t think anything like a large scale bailout is forthcoming.

Detroit’s bankruptcy poses no systemic risk to Wall Street and global financial markets. Fine. But it does pose a systemic risk to Main Street, local governments, and the contractual rights of pensioners. Credit rating agency Moody’s stated in a recent report that if Detroit manages to cut its pension obligations, other struggling cities could follow suit. The Detroit bankruptcy is establishing a template for wiping out government pensions everywhere. Chicago or New York could be next.

Germany Rejects EU Smart-Meter Recommendations on Cost Concerns – Bloomberg

Another reason why, and there are several, Smart Meters are bad news!

Stop Smart Meters Australia

Germany said it probably won’t follow smart-meter guidance from the European Union — which has recommended that 80 percent of homes install the devices by 2020 — because such a move would be too costly for consumers.

The EU proposal is “inadvisable” for Germany, the Economy Ministry said in a statement, citing a study it commissioned from consultants Ernst & Young. For users with low power consumption, the installation cost would be greater than the achievable energy savings, it said.

GreenMedInfo – a Promotion

The previous post from GMI leads to this promotional post. They have much to offer the alternative health enthusiast and the professionals also. They offer a ‘Natural Health Research Database‘ to the professionals that costs but has good reviews.

Here is a list of recent impressive articles:

That should provide some interest to some readers, but I think their quote deserves repeating here:

Quote of the Day

Everything on the earth has a purpose, every disease an herb to cure it, and every person a mission. This is the Indian theory of existence. – by Mourning Dove

Also of interest and relevance is an article posted by ‘Acne Einstein’ which disputes the worth and validity of alternative medicine in general. This appeared in the WordPress/Zemanta application that provides a search result of articles and photos relevant to the this post content.

It is worthy of mention because it is typical of attempts to rebut alternative medicine practices and theories, the main thrust being the lack of scientific backing. It specifically mentions a preferred reliance on science. Well, I won’t go into the details now, but it is becoming more clear and obvious day by day, that the science that supports mainstream medicine is itself being increasingly brought into disrepute by new evidence and proofs of dishonesty and/or bad science.

The article is The Unsinkable Rubber Duck Of Alternative Medicine

Read it and make up your own mind, if interested. It didn’t change my mind regarding who is trustworthy and who isn’t, both “sides” require responsible thought and consideration. But reliance on science per se,  is now a dubious criteria, IMHO.

Roundup and Birth Defects: Is the Public Being Kept in the Dark?

This ‘Green MedInfo‘ article, written by Earth Open Source. is important information for our health welfare. (BTW, their theme is “Education Equals Empowerment” – Very Powerful!)

An extract:

The facts are these:

  • Industry has known from its own studies since the 1980s that glyphosate causes malformations in experimental animals at high doses
  • Industry has known since 1993 that these effects also occur at lower and mid doses
  • The German government has known since at least 1998 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission’s expert scientific review panel knew in 1999 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission has known since 2002 that glyphosate causes malformations. This was the year it signed off on the current approval of glyphosate.

But this information was not made public. On the contrary, the pesticide industry and Europe’s regulators have jointly misled the public with claims that glyphosate is safe. As a result, Roundup is used by home gardeners and local authorities on roadsides, in school grounds, and in other public areas, as well as in farmers’ fields.

As recently as 2010, the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, BVL, told the Commission there was “no evidence of teratogenicity” (ability to cause birth defects) for glyphosate.

BVL made this comment in its rebuttal of an independent scientific study by Argentine scientists which showed that Roundup and glyphosate cause birth defects in experimental animals at concentrations much lower than those used in agricultural spraying. The study was prompted by reports of high rates of birth defects and cancers in areas of South America growing genetically modified (GM) Roundup Ready soy, which is engineered to tolerate being sprayed liberally with glyphosate herbicide.

Read all this interesting information, including a Monsanto response here.

How Heart Guidelines Based On Disgraced Research May Have Caused Thousands Of Deaths

This  article from ‘Forbes‘, suggests that an open mind is needed when learning about medical industry practices, research, guidelines, recommendations and trials.

What if doctors kept prescribing drugs based on large clinical trials that had been discredited? That is exactly what is happening in Europe, as guidelines for physicians have remained unchanged even as the studies they are based on were caught up in a two-year-old scandal. Some researchers say thousands of patients may have died as a result  in the United Kingdom alone.

Don Poldermans

Current European Society of Cardiology guidelines recommend that beta-blockers be given to many patients having surgery for noncardiac reasons to protect the heart during surgery. (US guidelines are somewhat less aggressive in their endorsement of perioperative beta-blockade.) The guidelines, which were published in 2009, were based on analyses of the available trials. The strongest evidence came from the DECREASE family of trials, which appeared to strongly support perioperative beta-blockade, and one other large trial, POISE, which raised concerns that beta-blockers might lead to an increase in deaths. When the ESC committee combined all the data they found a neutral effect on mortality but a strong benefit due to significant reductions in non-fatal MI and stroke with beta blocker use. This was the basis for the strong recommendation in the ESC guidelines.

In 2011, however, faith in the reliability of the DECREASE trials was shattered as a result of a scientific misconduct scandal centering on the principal investigator of the studies, the now disgraced Dutch researcher Don Poldermans. The issue was further complicated because, in addition to his key role in the trials, Poldermans was the chairman of the committee that drafted the guidelines.

Now, a group of UK researchers, led by Darrel Francis, have published in the journal Heart the results of a meta-analysis of the remaining non-DECREASE trials that tested perioperative beta-blockade. With the removal of the DECREASE trials the findings were strikingly different from the earlier analyses. In a combined population of 10,529 patients taken from 9 trials there was a statistically significant increase in the risk of death in the group of patients randomized to beta-blockers:

  • 162 deaths in 5264 patients randomized to beta-blockeres versus 129 deaths in 5265 patients randomized to placebo, for a 27% increase in the risk of death (RR 1.27, CI 1.01- 1.60, p=0.04).

In sharp contrast, the two randomized placebo-controlled DECREASE studies resulted in a 58% reduction in mortality associated with beta-blockers (although this was not statistically significant).

The analysis did find some benefits associated with beta-blockade, including a statistically significant reduction in non-fatal MI. However, it also found a significant increase in hypotension and stroke. In the new meta-analysis any beneficial effects are clearly overshadowed by the most important finding of an increased risk in death.

Free energy breakthrough? Holy grail of water splitting technology now achieved with sunlight, mirrors and seawater

Free Energy is high up on my list of interests and global energy resource.

The processing and eventual production of electrical energy is, of course, not free of costs, but it is certainly free of pollution and is 100% sustainable. Even though the author of this ‘Natural News‘ article suggests using the hydrogen for a more productive fusion process, there would be no necessity to go there, if we accept pollution free burning and steam turbine generators as adequate. Going ‘there’ involves incredible heat processes and, not sure about this but, ionising radiation?.

From Mike Adams, discussion on some hope for a cleaner future:

(NaturalNews) A team of scientists at the University of Colorado, Boulder, have achieved what appears to be the “holy grail” of water splitting technology for the production and storage of clean, abundant energy. Because sunlight is free, I’m calling this “free energy.”

To understand this breakthrough, it’s important to first understand why solar power has so many limitations. Solar is great when the sun is shining, but storing solar power require the deployment of a large array of heavy, expensive and toxic electrical storage devices known as “deep cycle batteries.” To put it in street terms, deep cycle battery technology sucks. The batteries suck, the chemicals suck, the weight sucks and the cost sucks. There is absolutely nothing to like about batteries unless you enjoy hulking around with heavy, useless objects.

So the “holy grail” of solar power has always been finding a way to store solar energy that’s portable, dense and relatively lightweight. Until now, that discovery has been elusive.

But now a team of scientists in Boulder, Colorado say they have come up with “a radically new technique that uses the power of sunlight to efficiently split water into its components of hydrogen and oxygen, paving the way for the broad use of hydrogen as a clean, green fuel.”

Sunlight, mirrors and a reaction chamber

The system works by exploiting a large array of ground mirrors to focus sunlight onto a tall reaction tower. There, the intense heat (2,500 degrees Fahrenheit) powers a reaction chamber containing metal oxides. The heat drives oxygen atoms off the metal oxides, causing them to “soak up” the oxygen from steam vapor introduced into the chamber. Steam vapor is, of course, made of water (H2O), so stealing the oxygen atoms from water leaves hydrogen gas that can then be collected.

In effect, the tower uses sunlight to split water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. The hydrogen gas is then collected, purified and pumped into high-pressure hydrogen containers which, pound for pound, are extremely dense “batteries” of energy that far out-perform chemical batteries.

Better yet, hydrogen gas then holds all this energy with 100% efficiency, losing no potential whatsoever, even if stored for decades. From an environmental perspective, hydrogen is also a super clean-burning fuel, producing no carbon dioxide emissions or particulate matter. (The reason hydrogen does not produce CO2 when combusted is because it does not contain carbon, obviously. CO2 production requires a carbon-based source of fuel such as hydrocarbons — coal, gasoline, diesel, etc.)
