Bordering some 21 countries including France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Spain, Syria and Turkey, the Mediterranean Sea is a rather large area. While the most nutritious ingredients in particular have long been the subject of debate, preparing whole meals from scratch is best for optimizing the medicinal benefits (and flavor). The following article will explore ten of the healthiest foods from the Mediterranean diet.

Part I: Top 5 Protein Sources

* Lamb (Sheep) – Ovis aries (Bovidae)

Sheep less than one year old are called lamb, where older sheep are called mutton. Even commercial lots tend to raise them more humanely than beef. Lamb contains vitamin B, iron, protein, tryptophan, and zinc. Grass-fed lamb contains Omega-3. Lamb tallow (lard) is useful for cooking. Lamb bones contain large amounts of gelatin and are stewed into stock used (with barley) in a soup called Scotch Broth.

* Wheat (Bulgar) – Triticum spp. (Poaceae)

A form of wheat that is parboiled and de-branned, bulgar should not to be confused with cracked wheat (crushed wheat berries). Wheat contains vitamins B1, B2, B3 and iron, along with magnesium, manganese, fiber, and tryptophan. Bulgar is low in fat, high in fiber, and contains protein. Bulgar is used in tabouli.

* Sesame (seed) – Sesamum indicum (Pedaliacea)

Sesame seeds contain lineolic acid, an unsaturated essential Omega-6 fatty acid. Sesame contains vitamin B3, E, folic acid, and protein. Sesame seeds are native to Africa, and are made into a paste called tahini (a key component in both hummus and baba ganoush).

* Garbanzo (bean) – Cicer arietinum (Faboideae)

Also called chick peas, garbanzo beans contain tryptophan, copper, fiber, folate, iron, manganese, molybdenum, protein, phosphorous and tryptophan. Originating in the Middle East, these legumes help lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar levels, and contain natural sulfites that feature detoxifying properties. Garbanzo beans are a key component in hummus. As with most grains, dried garbanzo beans are sprouting seeds.

(NaturalNews) Past research studies have confirmed the healthy benefits of consuming a traditional Mediterranean style diet. Researchers have demonstrated that this type of diet consisting of healthy quantities of extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, fruits and leafy greens and largely void of excess calories from animal protein is beneficial in the prevention of developing heart disease, diabetes, stroke and dementia. Mediterranean-style foods are packed with antioxidants that aid cellular function and polyphenol-rich olive oil, shown to lower systemic inflammation and risk from many chronic diseases.

As people age, many suffer from reduced bone mass, as years of a poor diet causes excessive leaching of calcium from the bone. This leads to osteoporosis and a significantly increased risk of bone fractures, as well as a regimen of deadly pharmaceuticals so commonly prescribed by allopathic practitioners in a vain attempt to preserve remaining bone strength.

Researchers publishing in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) have now shown that going on a two year Mediterranean style diet enhanced with olive oil can increase serum osteocalin concentrations, providing a protective shield against future bone loss. The lead study author, Dr. Jose Manuel Fernandez-Real commented “This is the first randomized study which demonstrates that olive oil preserves bone, at least as inferred by circulating bone markers, in humans.”

A Mediterranean diet with plentiful extra virgin olive oil promotes bone health in seniors

Researchers from Spain randomly selected 127 men, aged between 55 and 80 years who had lived in the community for a lengthy period of time. The elderly volunteers had never been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, but were diabetic and exhibited risk factors for heart disease such as family history, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Based on diet, each was assigned to a different intervention group based on consuming a low fat diet, a Mediterranean diet with virgin olive oil, or a Mediterranean diet including mixed nuts.

The team reviewed critical biomarkers (glucose, osteocalcin, cholesterol, triglycerides) at baseline and again after two years to determine the effect of the Mediterranean diet on overall health. The measurements revealed that the Mediterranean diet with olive oil resulted in a large rise in the concentrations of total osteocalcin, as well as other bone-formation factors. Of equal importance, blood calcium levels in the Mediterranean group with olive oil remained constant, but declined significantly in the other two sub-groups.

Dr. Fernandez-Real concluded “It’s important to note that circulating osteocalcin was associated with preserved insulin secretion in subjects taking olive oil.” Based on extensive research over the past 20 years, there should be little doubt that a diet consisting of nuts, seeds, fruits and a generous serving of extra virgin olive oil can preserve health and support normal bone health as we age.

AGW – Carbon Tax claimed to be destroying Australian economy.

This article has got the principle right. The carbon Tax will increase costs to the consumer and is appearing to cause lack of viability for businesses. The examples are basically hearsay and/or anecdotal, are likely true but not absolutely confirmed to be correct.

Businesses have been known to exaggerate or shift blame for increasing prices, closing down, moving off-shore or reducing development citing the carbon tax.

Here is an example of the confusion. “BHP mothballs Olympic Dam expansion” Blame on the Carbon Tax and the Mining Tax are included with mineral ore demand and price factors, by various people.

BHP’s change of heart, in regard to another instance, (“$US20 billion outer harbour expansion at Port Hedland will not be approved in the next 12 months”),  “The decision is a stunning change of direction in the space of six months, after BHP announced $US917 million in preparatory spending on the outer harbour on February 2.”, hasn’t been adequately explained as not influenced by the Australian Carbon Tax. (Ref ‘FarmOnLine News’ post).

On the other hand, the government have been quite categorical in claiming minimal adverse effects from the carbon tax and that is something that probably no-one actually believes true, and in my opinion, is certainly not true.

Australian authorities gain power to collect internet records.

Despite pleas from the public to respect civilians’ privacy and despite replies from politicians that they were aware of their responsibility to citizens and would respect with these rights, this post reveals that this is not the outcome.

I guess the only recourse available to the voter for this, (and other) failure(s) of the government to be “for the people”, is to vote independents into power. Both parties are inadequate. The Greens are showing some responsibility regarding this issue but are set on their own path to destroy the economy.

Laws passed today will allow authorities to collect and keep Australians’ internet records, including their web-browsing history, social media activity and emails.

Attorney-General Nicola Roxon said the laws would help police track cyber-criminals around the globe, and would give authorities the power to find people engaged in forgery, fraud, child pornography, and infringement of copyright and intellectual property.

The laws will also allow Australia to accede to the Council of Europe Convention on Cyber-crime, which has 34 members.

”Cyber-crime is a growing threat that touches all aspects of modern life,” Ms Roxon said. ”It poses complex policy and law enforcement challenges, partly due to the transnational nature of the internet.”
But Greens communications spokesman Scott Ludlam said the laws went further, and the government had failed to explain why the far-reaching powers were necessary.

”The European treaty doesn’t require ongoing collection and retention of communications, but the Australian bill does,” Senator Ludlam said.

”It also leaves the door open for Australia to assist in prosecutions which could lead to the death penalty overseas.”

The legislation will allow the Australian Federal Police to collaborate with international authorities in seeking Australian communications data under warrants.

serious, very worrying scenario. This refers to the removal of longstanding protections for civilian populations from military intervention in domestic conflicts.  As the article mentions this has already been the case in US (blame 9/11)

International Humanitarian laws exist for this very purpose of protection, so one wonders how a civilized country can legislate to the contrary without their being involved in an international war crime situation. There again we have seen the UN become a supporter, if not instigator, of military intervention in a sovereign country (Libya and probably now Syria), so what protection can citizens expect from the UN and the Geneva Conventions?

On the other hand, many countries including Australia, have recently (2006) adopted a definition of citizens rights that leaves the way open for self-defence to be construed as combatant behaviour, thereby incurring a loss of any rights. So wide open as to be practically without meaning.
