Spam Comments

Every day I receive many spam comments. Occasionally one might be genuine and it can be approved.

Today, I have received many, all related to the same facebook address, and many are actually relevant to posts on this blog. However, except for two, they are associated with inappropriate posts. Some are referenced to a person and are obviously originated to display elsewhere.

Just for fun, I will display the useful ones here, and invite comments of any sensible nature, on their content and my reaction to them. I am not involved with facebook, concerned about privacy, and fail to understand what the processes of these spam comments mean.

‘Mary’ Aren’t they doing just that already? I can hear the calls “Fear the torrerists! Fear the arab world! Fear everything! You need to ‘protect’ you. They came from the skies! Be afraid, be very afraid.” just by looking at the pictures…

‘ Gobang’ ‘As a scientist this is one study. More evendice from independent labs needs to be generated to corroborate the findings & suggested mechanism. This study is in mice. Can we yet tell if humans will have the same response? I second the point that celiac’s disease may not only encompass the intestinal atrophy. Humans are highly variable test subjects, so I doubt that there will be a silver bullet fix for celiac’s.As a celiac point taken about how wheat as fillers, etc., is bad for you. But I think it’s worth it to encourage researchers to strive for a cure because we always learn more about the disease in this process. And why not get big pharma to spend money on learning about this disease and help give it publicity? Yes, the gluten free diet is a reasonalbe and safe alternative. We’ve got it pretty good compared to RA or MS. However, please don’t tell me what I should and should not do to my body. For some, the side effects may be worth dealing with, for others, maybe not. I think it’s best to try to move forward with both awareness and therapies, and let each celiac make informed, thoughtful decisions based the information available. Freedom of choice, people!

‘Mary’ I have been gf for 2 years, I have become more and more senvstiie as time has gone by. I do not get glutened by food any more, I have found that I am so senvstiie that I can get glutened by scented candles, if my friends wear hairspray or perfume, if I walk past bread in the stores. These fragrances and smells are everywhere, I take glutenzyme to help combat this issue but still get sick. I don’t know what I would do without glutenzyme as it minimises the sickness. Both my children are gf, we all have Celiac Disease and I have noticed my daughter is becoming senvstiie to fragraces also.I know my children struggle with all of the social side of being gf, food is a huge part of social events and it is just extremely difficult for them. Taking food to events like this is the only way we can be a part of these social gatherings.Being on the gf diet doesn’t stop us getting sick from fragrances and other particulates containing gluten, I would love to be able to take something that would minimise my bodies reactions to these airbourne gluten bugs. Obviously, I would seriously have to consider any negative side effects but I would love to not be so senvstiie and if a medicine can do that I would be willing to try it.

‘Luis’ There are always befnties to research! As a researcher, it is difficult to predict how human results will differ when initial tests are conducted with a murine (mouse) test subject, but we should be glad that there are groups willing to study this disease and attempt to make new discoveries .every little bit helps! While I don’t believe pills should be a fix for everything, I don’t feel it is necessarily fair to attack big pharma as there are thousands of people who depend on drugs to manage chronic life threatening diseases (like epliepsy as mentioned above, allergies, migranes, etc .). Often times there are dangerous side effects of taking medication, so it is always good to be careful and EDUCATE yourself about the drug you are taking BEFORE you take it. In addition, you are responsible for your own health! Just because your doctor tells you something or prescribes you something, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your own research about that disease or drug. As far as diet goes, it can massively suck having eat gluten free at times (I have to as well). I know we all have things that we really miss (beer for me), but when it comes down to it, it is generally much healthier and closer to the way we should be eating. I am delighted to see that there are research groups making new findings about this disease. Thank you and keep up the good work!!

‘Coty’ It appeared in the PNAS last September not in the Nature. The February Nature paper is about the role of vaiimtn A as a needed coplayer for Il-15 action. Here is the abstract of the mice study from PNAS. The words of caution about potential new therapies can never be exaggerated.Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2009 Sep 15;106(37):15849-54. Epub 2009 Sep 1.Antibody-mediated blockade of IL-15 reverses the autoimmune intestinal damage in transgenic mice that overexpress IL-15 in enterocytes.Yokoyama S, Watanabe N, Sato N, Perera PY, Filkoski L, Tanaka T, Miyasaka M, Waldmann TA, Hiroi T, Perera LP.Department of Allergy and Immunology, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science, Tokyo, 113-8613, Japan.AbstractCeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease with a relatively high prevalence especially in the western hemisphere. A strong genetic component is involved in the pathogenesis of CD with virtually all individuals that develop the disease carrying HLA-DQ alleles that encode specific HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 heterodimers. Consumption of cereals rich in gluten triggers a chronic intestinal inflammation in genetically susceptible individuals leading to the development of CD. Emerging evidence has implicated a central role for IL-15 in the orchestration and perpetuation of inflammation and tissue destruction in CD. Therefore, IL-15 represents an attractive target for development of new therapies for CD. Transgenic mice that express human IL-15 specifically in enterocytes (T3(b)-hIL-15 Tg mice) develop villous atrophy and severe duodeno-jejunal inflammation with massive accumulation of NK-like CD8(+) lymphocytes in the affected mucosa. We used these mice to demonstrate that blockade of IL-15 signaling with an antibody (TM-beta1) that binds to murine IL-2/IL-15Rbeta (CD122) leads to a reversal of the autoimmune intestinal damage. The present study, along with work of others, provides the rationale to explore IL-15 blockade as a test of the hypothesis that uncontrolled expression of IL-15 is critical in the pathogenesis and maintenance of refractory CD.

‘Kevinne’ My daughter has stpoepd liking mac & cheese. But she’s only 3 and is going through those phases of loving something for TOO long and then suddenly never touching it again. Thankfully she likes colors AND tomatoes, so your Red, White And Green recipe really tickled her fancy (although we had to get sneaky with the peppers, and dice them finely). Awesome recipes here.Jobo recently posted..Game Room Ideas and Pool Table Room Requirements

‘Carolina’ The Filipino children in the San Diego contuy in California seem to be more vulnerable than others to the Kawasaki disease (KD), a new study shows. The disease inflames the medium-sized and affects many organs in the body including the skin, mucous membranes, lymph nodes, blood vessel walls, and most the Without timely treatment, a child will take longer to recover and 25% of untreated children may develop disease.

‘Herbert’ A lot. More today than a year ago.Because of Obamacare, no company in America ofrefs stand alone children’s health insurance. Why? Obamacare dictates that it is guaranteed issue, without rate ups, regardless of health. Therefore, there is no reason to purchase it until there is a claim needing to be paid. That’s not health insurance. That’s a confiscatory tax on health insurance companies. Fortunately, they aren’t slaves yet, so they exercised the F U clause in the contract with the purple bellies from Washington and just refused to do business where they are guaranteed to lose money. How do you fix the problem of un- and under-insured? By making health insurance affordable. How do you make it affordable? By removing ALL government mandates, loser pays tort reform, encouraging competition between providers (enforce existing anti-trust laws), eliminate the AMA monopoly on billing codes, and eliminate the connection between employment and health insurance. Do these things and we’ll see health insurance cost less than auto insurance. More people will be covered, more people will be healthy.

‘Rajveer’ hat since the last Arab-Israeli war in 1973 they have decided to puruse peace as a means to end disputes over occupied land and the status of the Palestinians. The king’s comments suggested that Arab governments could decide to rethink that approach.”No one can predict what will happen if things get out of control,” said the statement from the king.”The Arabs have declared peace as a strategic choice … and put forward a clear and fair proposal of land for peace and have ignored [Arab] extremist calls opposing the peace proposal … but patience cannot last forever.”posted by newsbeat1 at 10:44 PM | 0 comments CNN- Inside Hezbollah territoryCOOPER (voice-over):” Drive into southern Beirut, and you quickly discover another city entirely. A heavily bombed state within a state, beyond the control of the Lebanese government. This is Hezbollah territory. Along the road posted like billboards, pictures of so-called martyrs, Hezbollah fighters who died battling Israel.(on camera) You can drive around. It doesn’t seem like there’s anybody around. All of a sudden your eyes, it’s almost like adjusting to the darkness. Suddenly, you realize there are people who are watching you and guys on motorcycles talking on cell phones who pass you by, watching very closely what you’re doing.(voice-over) Tension in this neighborhood is high. Many here are convinced Israel is sending in agents to help guide their aerial attacks.(on camera) Not allowed to enter Hezbollah territory really without their permission. They control this whole area, even after the sustained Israeli bombing campaign. We’ve arranged with a Hezbollah representative to get permission to come here. We’ve been told to pull over to the side of the road and just wait.(voice-over) We’d come to get a look at the damage and had hoped to talk with a Hezbollah representative. Instead, we found ourselves with other foreign reporters taken on a guided tour by Hezbollah. Young men on motor scooters followed our every movement. They only allowed us to videotape certain streets, certain buildings. Once, when they thought we’d videotaped them, they asked us to erase the tape. These men are called al-Shabab, Hezbollah volunteers who are the organization’s eyes and ears.(on camera) You see their CD’s on the wall still.Hezbollah representatives are with us now but don’t want to be photographed. They’ll point to something like that and they’ll say, “Well, look, this is a store.” The civilians lived in this building. This is a residential complex. And while that may be true, what the Israelis will say is that Hezbollah has their offices, their leadership has offices and bunkers even in residential neighborhoods. And if you’re trying to knock out the Hezbollah leadership with air strikes, it’s very difficult to do that without killing civilians. As bad as this damage is, it certainly could have been much worse in terms of civilian casualties. Before they started heavily bombing this area, Israeli warplanes did drop leaflets in this area, telling people to get out.The civilian death toll, though, has angered many Lebanese. Even those who do not support Hezbollah are outraged by the pictures they’ve seen on television of civilian casualties.(voice-over) Civilian casualties are clearly what Hezbollah wants foreign reporters to focus on. It keeps the attention off them. And questions about why Hezbollah should still be allowed to have weapons when all the other militias in Lebanon have already disarmed. After letting us take pictures of a few damaged buildings, they take us to another location, where there are ambulances waiting.(on camera) This is a heavily orchestrated Hezbollah media event. When we got here, all the ambulances were lined up. We were allowed a few minutes to talk to the ambulance drivers. Then one by one, they’ve been told to turn on their sirens and zoom off so that all the photographers here can get shots of ambulances rushing off to treat civilians. That’s the story — that’s the story that Hezbollah wants people to know about.(voice-over) These ambulances aren’t responding to any new bombings. The sirens are strictly for effect. When a man in a nearby building is prompted to play Hezbollah resistance songs on his stereo, we decide it’s time to go.Hezbollah may not be terribly subtle about spinning a story, but it is telling perhaps that they try. Even after all this bombing, Hezbollah is still organized enough to have a public relations strategy, still in control enough to try and get its message out

‘Dani’ Interesting stuff Rhian. With so much at stake and world leaders pitutng their own spin on things it’s really hard for the general public to know what to believe. I think part of the problem is that there isn’t really a clear picture in the average person’s mind on what it all means. The best explanation I’ve seen was from a couple of graphs I saw on a poster at BAS while I was there:The first one shows how closely linked carbon dioxide levels are to temperature, the second how humans have affected the carbon dioxide levels over the last couple of centuries.I hadn’t seen that information before then and I still remember how amazed I was that I’d somehow missed what should really be common knowledge. I reckon if everyone in the world was sat down and had those graphs explained to them people might start taking it all a bit more seriously!

‘Miki’ Running is an awesome way to get htlheay and do something good for people at the same time. I agree you have to take matters into your own hands when it comes to your health. Life is too short to live unhealthy.

‘Keisha’ Lubo, I have been a long time reader of your blog and you never diispoant. I am hoping that AGW slowly drifts into the ashbin of history but I am afraid that it will not move on until these nutcases have some other issue to fight towards. Maybe clean water, but they will not go quietly. We have seen the lengths they will go to manipulate the public and the scientific process, I just can’t see these people on the fringes returning to normal nytime soon. Carbon Fever takes a long time to heal.

‘Ernane’ not talking about the inteenrt persay, try getting on tv and saying whatever you want, and btw you cannot post whatever you want on the inteenrt, look up the about the blogs that were forcefully taken down last year by the government, yeah nuff said

  1. Got an itchy finger Ken… use that delete key Pal

    • Hi Clare,
Unless the comment is directed specifically to a relevant post AND it has something to say, AND it has a recognizable author, I agree there is not much point in publishing it even if it has some relevance. Without continuity of the commentary, there is more to lose than gain,
      Thanks for your comment.
But it is fascinating how the spamming “system” works.

      • Maybe it is because of this rubbish that we bloggers are receiving…. the BIGGER blogs have that letter numbering thingie you have to insert to show you are a human and not a machine.

  2. ggita32 says:

The dark side of blogging Ken. We get the same at TIP. We have to clean the spam folder two or three times a day to stay ahead of them. Recommendation….use the delete key.

me out much. I’m hoping to give one thing back and aid others like you aided me.

    • Well, how!, Talking of spam, your comment made it through somehow (no pun intended).
Your site intrigues me, especially as I do have a mice problem, in two dwellings actually.
If you have something to say, your welcome.
Do you have other topics in mind for your blog?
